KABUL (SW) – As the world marks ‘International Food Day’, millions of people in Afghanistan struggle with extreme poverty.
According to the latest report of the United Nations about Afghanistan, 19 million Afghan citizens do not have access to enough food. On the other hand, officials of the Afghan Red Crescent Society office say that 10 million Afghan citizens need urgent aid.
Irfanullah Sharafzai, the spokesperson of the Afghan Red Crescent Society office, said that more than half of the country’s population is facing poverty. “8 to 10 million people in the country need urgent aid, and more than 50 percent of the country’s population is in need.”
However, experts on economic issues call unemployment the main cause of the current situation in the country and emphasize that the level of poverty will decrease with the increase of work in the country.
Abdul Nasir Rashtiya, an expert on economic issues, told Salam Watandar that the current humanitarian aid does not cure any pain in the long term and the only way to eliminate poverty is investment and job creation.
