KABUL (SW) – The World Health Organization has said that Afghanistan is closer than ever to eradicating polio.
The WHO said in a tweet that Afghanistan and Pakistan are the only countries where polio still exists.
Insecurity in these two countries has been a constant barrier against the implementation of the polio vaccine. In the current year, two cases of children’s paralysis have been registered in Afghanistan.
According to the statistics of the World Health Organization, in 2020, 56 cases of child paralysis were registered in Afghanistan. This figure has been reduced to four in 2021.
This organization has emphasized that Afghanistan has a great opportunity to eliminate children’s paralysis due to polio virus.
According to World Health Organization data, 46 thousand volunteers including doctors, traditional healers and pharmacists across Afghanistan are now taking care of polio vaccination drive. It should be noted that October 24 has been named the World Polio Eradication Day worldwide to raise awareness.
