Cholera outbreak claims 14 lives in Helmand, 2000 infected

LASHKARGAH (SW) – At least 14 lives were list and nearly 2000 more infected to the herald cholera in Helmand province, said officials.

At Helmand’s Bost provincial hospital the number of patients has increased. In addition to other patients, many cholera patients have been brought to this hospital. Due to the increase in the number of cholera patients in Bost provincial hospital, now special beds have been put in tents and containers.

Abdul Aziz, a local resident, whose family members have been infected with cholera and brought his patients to Bost Hospital, said: “I came from Nahr Seraj district, one of my daughters and two sons have contracted this disease, and my son-in-law has also been sick for two days. He got sick before and he is hospitalized.”

Abdul Basir, a resident of Nava district, who has a number of his family members infected with cholera, brought his patients to Bost Hospital, says: “My father is sick, he got heat stroke the other day. In the village, many children and adults have contracted this disease.”

Meanwhile, Mohammad Qasim Riaz, the director of information of the Directorate of Information and Culture in Helmand,  accepts the increase in the number of people suffering from this disease, but says that the health institutions are trying to catch up.

According to him, 2,000 people have been infected with this disease in Helmand province, of which 1,100 are residents of Baghran district, and 14 of them have died.

The director of information of the Helmand Department of Information and Culture added that medicine has also reached different districts through awareness teams, mobile clinics and health institutions and now the situation is under control.

It should be noted that in addition to Helmand, the severe cholera disease is increasing in other provinces, including Zabul, and the number of patients is reaching hundreds.
