Five more lives lost and 11 injured to another earthquake in Paktika

SHARANA (SW) – At least five people got killed and 11 more got hurt following an earthquake in Paktika that was devastated by a strong earthquake earlier this week.

The Bakhtar state news agency reported on Twitter that an earthquake had occurred in Geyan district of Paktika province. It reported that the earthquake shook the district at around 10 am today.

Bakhtar added that this is a preliminary statistic and there is a possibility of an increase in casualties.

A strong earthquake shook Paktika and Khost provinces two days ago, killing more than 1,000 people and injuring about 1,500 others. Hundreds of homes were destroyed and people suffered heavy financial losses.

Local Paktika officials say 2,000 families affected by the quake are in urgent need of assistance.

Mohammad Amin Hudhaifa, Paktika’s director of information and culture, said that although aid from some domestic and international organizations had reached the quake-hit areas, but these aids are not enough. According to him, people’s homes have been destroyed and they are in dire need of shelter and basic food and non-food items.

On the other hand, residents of Gyan district say that they lost their family members and a number of other family members were injured in the earthquake yesterday morning.

They add that they have not yet received any assistance from the government or donors. In an interview with Salam Watandar, residents of Gyan district said that women and their children spend the day and night under the trees due to lack of shelter.
