EU reiterates call for protecting rights in Afghanistan

MONITORING (SW) – The EU has reiterated call for protecting human rights in Afghanistan as Special Representatives and Envoys for Afghanistan from the Member States met in Brussels.

“We were joined by external experts including on human rights and on the economy”, Tomas Niklasson, Special Envoy of the European Union for Afghanistan.

He added that concerns about the deteriorating human rights situation, notably for women, girls and ethnic groups, the lack of political inclusivity, and the inability of the Taliban to adopt and implement coherent policies in line with commitments to the Afghan people were raised. “The EU stands by its commitment to support the Afghan people”, he tweeted.

Meanwhile, Afghan analysts say that holding such meetings and raising concerns about the human rights situation will not improve the situation in Afghanistan.

Abdul Basir Nabizada, a human rights expert and university professor, told Salam Watandar that the world should force the Islamic Emirate to change its policy by imposing pressures.

Javad Hosseini, a political analyst, cites human rights abuses in Afghanistan such as not allowing female students to attend school, not involving the people in governance, and disregarding public amnesty as among grim violations of the fundamental rights.

Since the rise to power of the Islamic Emirate, rights groups have been constantly raising concerns over the deteriorating state of affairs in Afghanistan.
