KABUL (SW) – Paktika local officials say at least 2,000 quake-hit families need immediate help days after the catastrophe.
A strong earthquake shook Paktika and Khost provinces yesterday morning, killing more than 1,000 people and injuring about 1,500 others.
Hundreds of homes were destroyed and people suffered heavy financial losses.
Local Paktika officials say 2,000 families affected by the quake are in urgent need of assistance.
Mohammad Amin Hudhaifa, Paktika’s director of information and culture, said that although aid from some domestic and international organizations had reached the quake-hit areas, but these aids are not enough. According to him, people’s homes have been destroyed and they are in dire need of shelter and basic food and non-food items.
On the other hand, residents of Gyan district say that they lost their family members and a number of other family members were injured in the earthquake yesterday morning.
They add that they have not yet received any assistance from the government or donors. In an interview with Salam Watandar, residents of Gyan district said that women and their children spend the day and night under the trees due to lack of shelter.
Meanwhile, residents of Spiri district in Khost province say they have not received any help so far and people are in dire need of shelter and immediate assistance. They emphasized that children will starve to death if they do not reach the affected areas immediately.
Bashir Ahmad Osmani, Khost’s director of information and culture, also acknowledged that full aid had not reached the affected areas, but he says first aid will reach those areas today.
