12 people killed in Badghis earthquake

QALA-E-NAU (SW) – At least 12 people have lost their lives to earthquake in the western Badghis province, officials have confirmed.

Local officials in Badghis say 12 people, including women and children, have been killed in the quake in Qadis district. Qadis district chief Mohammad Saleh Pardel told Salam Watandar that the quake had destroyed the roofs of several residential houses in the district, killing scores of people.

According to the district governor, the victims of the incident include women and children. He added that the dead were residents of Badruk, Darband Sefid and Khak-e-Pulk areas of the district. The Qadis district governor stressed that a number of people in the district had been injured in the quake and that financial losses had been incurred.

According to the Qadis district governor, the figures are not final and are changing. Earlier, officials at Badghis Provincial Hospital reported that an 18-year-old girl had been injured in an earthquake in the province.

According to reports, the US Seismological Center (USGS) said that the epicenter of the earthquake in the western parts of the country was Qadis district of Badghis province. The magnitude of the earthquake was 4.9 and its depth was 10 km.
