Air pollution in Kabul hits new toxic levels

KABUL (SW) – Health experts have warned citizens of the dangerous effects of increasing air pollution in the capital city, Kabul.

Experts have dubbed Kabul’s air pollution deadly and say that the level of air pollution has reached its highest and worst levels in recent days.

Zahed Alizay, a doctor in Kabul, told Salam Watandar that air pollution in the country kills thousands of people every year and fears that this year’s winter air pollution will affect the people of Kabul even more.

“Air pollution affects the skin, hair, heart, lungs and even kidney because the air we breathe is absorbed together with oxygen through the lungs and enters the bloodstream.”

Fayyaz Safi, another physician, emphasizes that breathing polluted and toxic air increases the risk of various diseases and even causes death.

Doctors advise residents of the capital to reduce the use of unrefined coal and other sources of smoke in order to avoid the dangers of air pollution.

However, a number of citizens are proposing solutions to reduce the risk of air pollution, such as using masks outdoors and reducing the use of smoke sources.

Last year, according to the Ministry of Public Health, about 5,000 people died of respiratory and heart diseases in the country. Meanwhile, according to a UN report, Kabul is among the ten most polluted cities in the world.
