KABUL (SW) – Amid evident hike in the prices of many basic commodities, Kabul residents said they were now witnessing drop in the weight of a standard loaf of bread as well.

Rising unemployment, the rise in price of food and fuel, the reduction in foreign aid, and the freeze of stat funds in the United States have also made it difficult for citizens to make ends meet.

In conversation with Salam Watandar, a number of citizens in Kabul said that after the domination of the Islamic Emirate and the increase in the price of food and fuel, there are now changes in the weight and price of a loaf of bread as well compared to the past.

Mohammad Qasim, a Kabul resident, expressed concern about the increase in prices, saying that although there is no income for many, the city dwellers now have to pay even more to get a loaf of bread than before.

“We used to buy a bread for 10 afghanis, but now we buy it for 15 afghanis. Everything has become more expensive than before.”

A number of bakers also confirmed that the weight of bread has decreased, saying that they have to change the weight of bread due to the increase in the price of flour and gas.

Isa, a baker in Kabul, said the rise in the value of the dollar against the afghani and the decline in imports to Afghanistan had pushed up the price of bread.
