District dwellers in Balkh fleeing due to shortages of food, medicine

MAZAR-E-SHARIF (SW) – Lack of food, medicine and jobs have forced an array of Balkh residents to leave their homes in districts and rush towards provincial capital Mazar-e-Sharif.

Morteza, who came to the city center from Shulgarah district to treat his mother, says that there is no medicine or doctor in their village, and here they are waiting for their turn at a public hospital.

“There is no medicine or doctor in our village. We came here to treat our patients. There are no facilities or doctors here”, he said.

Another Balkh resident, Abdul Sabur, who brought his wife for treatment, complained about the lack of medicine in Chaharkant district. He called on the Taliban’s Islamic Emirate to pay attention towards the issue and solve the people’s problems.

“There is no medicine in Chaharkent district. I had to bring my children to Mazar-e-Sharif for Abu Ali Sina Hospital and I request the government of the Islamic Emirate to pay some attention to Chaharkent district.”

Meanwhile, Sheikh Mir Saddam, the director of Balkh Public Health, confirmed the lack of medicine and facilities in the districts and said that the workload in the central hospital is very high, but this hospital also faces a shortage of medicine and facilities.

Following the rise to power of the Taliban, Afghanistan’s state assets got frozen abroad while the aid supply to country dwindled leading to serious humanitarian crises.
