UN High Commissioner for Refugees visits Kabul to assess situation

KABUL (SW) – The UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi has met the Taliban’s external affairs minister Amir Khan Mottaki in Kabul, the group’s spokesman announced on Tuesday.

Mohammad Naeem, a spokesman for the Taliban’s political bureau in Qatar, said Amir Khan Mottaki, the group’s acting foreign minister, had met yesterday with Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and his accompanying delegation in Kabul.

The spokesman for the Taliban’s political office in Qatar tweeted that the meeting focused on humanitarian aid, internally displaced persons and Afghan refugees abroad. Naeem added that Amir Khan Mottaqi had said during the meeting that he wanted the Afghan refugees to return to their country and that the Taliban were ready to cooperate in this regard.

The head of the Taliban’s foreign ministry added that the return of internally displaced persons before the arrival of winter is now a priority. Mottaqi called on the United Nations to work together in this regard: “The international community, with the support of the Government of Afghanistan, must create an environment in which Afghans no longer migrate from Afghanistan, but those who have recently or in the past are encouraged to see the situation. And return to Afghanistan.”

The acting Taliban’s foreign minister added that they are committed to providing a safe and secure life for Afghan refugees, and that this is their responsibility.

However, with the Taliban taking control of Afghanistan, hundreds of thousands of Afghans have fled the country. In addition, Afghanistan has about 6 million refugees in Iran, Pakistan and some European countries.
