Continued fighting would not get the Taliban any legitimacy

KABUL (SW) – The US Embassy in Kabul has warned the Taliban that their continued attacks will not get them closer to the legitimacy they wish for.

In a statement on Sunday, the Embassy stressed the Taliban should devote their energy to the peace process, not a military campaign. It also called for a ceasefire.

It also said that there are reports from the districts captured by Taliban about efforts to suppress the human rights of women and girls and shut down private and government media in order to hide cases of human rights violations and limit freedom of speech.

Separately, the Embassy has urged U.S. citizens to leave Afghanistan ‘immediately’ using available commercial flight options. ‘Given the security conditions and reduced staffing, the Embassy’s ability to assist U.S. citizens in Afghanistan is extremely limited even within Kabul’, it said.
