KABUL (SW) – The Afghan government on Saturday welcomed NATO’s renewed commitment towards Afghanistan after withdrawal of foreign troops.
According to the foreign ministry, the Afghan government welcomed NATO’s statement reaffirming its support on capacity building, support to the institutions, financial support, and training of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces and providing services for the functioning of Kabul airport.
It considered this as a practical step at the beginning of a new chapter of cooperation between NATO and Afghanistan in the capacity development of the ANSDF to fight against terrorism and ensuring lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan and the region.

Expressing gratitude to NATO for continuing its pledges to Afghanistan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it was ready to strive within the new chapter of cooperation to fight against common threats, terrorism, and violent extremism in Afghanistan, the region, and beyond, establishing an independent, sovereign, united, and peaceful Afghanistan based on democratic structures.
A day earlier, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the alliance was opening a new chapter in Afghanistan as it plans to provide advice and capacity support to Afghan security institutions, financial support to the Afghan security forces. and to provide military education and training outside Afghanistan, focusing on Special Operations Forces.
Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg met with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Friday to discuss preparations for the upcoming NATO Summit on 14 June.
“We are planning to fund the provision of services, including support for the functioning of Kabul airport. All this will enable NATO Allies and the broader international community to continue to help the Afghan people and contribute to the peace efforts”, said Stoltenberg.
