Restrictions under consideration to counter third wave of COVID-19

KABUL (SW) – The Ministry of Public Health on Monday warned against the spread of the third wave of the coronavirus in the country.

Mirwais Alizai, deputy spokesman for the Ministry of Public Health, said the number of coronavirus cases in the country was on the rise, with Nangarhar, Herat, Kandahar and Kabul having the highest number of coronavirus cases.

According to him, the average number of deaths due to COVID-19 is between four and six a day. He said up to 2500 tests are conducted on daily basis out of which up to up to 140 prove positive. He said consultations were underway to close the country’s borders, but stressed that no specific program had been launched by the Ministry of Public Health yet as further steps would be taken if the situation did not improve.

Meanwhile, the Acting Minister of Public Health Waheed Majroh said in a meeting with provincial public health directors on Monday that in order to prevent and counter the third wave of the pandemic in the country, it remained under consultation that the airlines shall close flights from India to Afghanistan, and movement is restricted with Iran and Pakistan. He added domestically, restricting movements were also under consideration.

This comes as many citizens continue to defy the ministry’s recommendations on social distancing, use of masks and other hygiene measures.
