NDS chief says terrorist groups continue to pose serious threat

KABUL (SW) – Ahmad Zia Siraj, director general of NDS, has said elements and remnants of terrorist groups continue to pose a serious threat to Afghanistan, the region and the world.

He said this on Saturday addressing a press conference at the National Security Council Office.

According to Siraj, the Afghan government was in contact with the CIA and other international agencies and was working on a new strategy to combat terrorism.

Speaking on the occasion, Hamdullah Mohib, the National Security Adviser, said the Taliban believe remained under illusion they can grab power through force in Afghanistan. He called on the Taliban to respond to the call for peace that all Afghans wanted. According to Mohib, the delay in the Istanbul Conference made it clear that the Taliban were not committed to peace and instead wanted war.

“I want to reassure the people and neighbors of Afghanistan that the Afghan security forces are in control of the country and the situation, and that they are ready and able to respond if the enemy has any sinister plan,” he said.

On his term, Acting Interior Minister Hayatullah Hayat underlined the capabilities of the security forces and assured the Afghan people that they were ready to defend their homeland.

Recently, concerns have been raised about how to secure the country and conduct anti-terrorism operations after the withdrawal of foreign troops.
