Hekmatyar urges Taliban not attend Istanbul conference

KABUL (SW) – The Taliban must seize opportunity for peace in Afghanistan at the forthcoming Istanbul conference, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar said on Saturday.

Addressing a press conference, the Hezb-e-Islami leader said the Taliban should not skip the intra-Afghan negotiations if they wanted to end the war. Addressing the Taliban, he added that if they boycott the intra-Afghan peace talks, they will gain nothing and in fact would be in confrontation with the world and the people of Afghanistan.

According to the leader of Hezb-e-Islami, the faction that justifies itself and its stand will never avoid dialogue for peace. Gulbuddin Hekmatyar said: “A person who considers himself right and has strong reasons for his position is not afraid to talk to anyone. Attend the meeting, present your reasons to the other side and to the world, this is an opportunity for you, why not seize it?”

The Hezb-e-Islami chief emphasized that the Taliban should not boycott peace talks with Afghan citizens because of US violations of the Doha agreement.

The Istanbul Conference on Peace in Afghanistan is scheduled to begin on the April 24 with the presence of representatives of the Afghan government, the Taliban and the countries of the region and the world.
