39 civilians killed in 4 provinces in a week

KABUL (SW) – Findings by the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission suggest 39 civilians have been killed in four provinces in the past week alone.

Zabihullah Farhang, media officer of the commission, said the civilians were killed in sticky and roadside bomb blasts and armed attacks in Farah, Parwan, Nangarhar and Kandahar provinces.

The dead included four women and eight children, according to Farhang. He added that four civilians, including two women and two children, were injured in the incidents.

The rights group said in a statement that the attackers were Taliban militants and unidentified individuals. The commission has called for an immediate ceasefire and a negotiated solution to the conflict.

The commission described the current situation in the country as “worrying” and added that the outcome of the war was nothing more than killings and destruction.

This comes as President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani called for a ceasefire in the run-up to the holy month of Ramadan and called on the Taliban to accept the people’ rightful call for a permanent truce.

The Taliban have not yet responded to calls from the president and the people for a ceasefire.
