Muhib warns against haphazard withdrawal of foreign troops

KABUL (SW) – National Security Adviser Hamdullah Muhib said on Saturday that with the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan, there is a danger of a return to civil war.

Addressing a press conference, Muhib said he was also concerned about US intelligence agencies warning about a risk of a return to civil war if there is no peace in the country and foreign troops withdraw.

“The Taliban are making excuses for the withdrawal of foreign troops from the country, which shows that they do not want peace in Afghanistan,” he said. The National Security Adviser said if foreign forces leave and there is no peace, Afghanistan will return to civil war.

“No one wants the Taliban to return to power”, said Muhib.

While the president’s national security adviser warned of a deteriorating security situation, the defense ministry officials said the withdrawal of foreign troops will not worsen the situation.

Reacting to a report by US intelligence agencies, acting minister of defense, Yassin Zia said security agencies were ready to defend the country.

“The Ministry of National Defense, in cooperation with all security agencies, is fully prepared to defend Afghanistan in any situation and is ready to defend the country in the worst case scenario”, he said.
