KABUL/ DUSHANBE (SW) – Afghanistan and Tajikistan on Monday inked multiple memorandums of understanding as President Ashraf Ghani arrived in Dushanbe to attend the foreign ministers’ meeting of the Heart of Asia-Istanbul Process (HAIP).
Fatima Morchal, deputy spokeswoman for the President, confirmed President Ghani’s visit to Tajikistan and said that during his two-day visit to Tajikistan, the President would attend the conference and meet top officials to discuss cooperation in various fields.
The Presidential Palace said that President Ghani and his Tajik counterpart Emomali Rahmon oversaw signing of five agreements in the fields of security, economy, trade, transit and cultural fields.
President Ghani also addressed the National University of Tajikistan and received an honorary doctorate from the university’s president.
The first meeting of the Heart of Asia-Istanbul Process was held in Istanbul in 2006 and has since been held in the member countries of the process, including Afghanistan. The goal of the Heart of Asia-Istanbul Process is to strengthen peace and stability in the region.
Seven countries of the region, including Iran, Pakistan, India, Saudi Arabia and China, are key members of the HAIP. Six other countries and eight regional and international organizations are members of the process as observers.
