KUNDUZ (SW) – A number of Kunduz provincial council members on Sunday called for the removal of provincial governor Abdul Sattar Mirzakwal.
Addressing a public gathering in this connection, Ghulam Rabbani Rabbani, member of the provincial council, said the governor has dishonored the security forces with his derogatory remarks. Demanding complete overhaul of the provincial administration, he urged the government to replace Mirzakwal with a competent new governor.
The provincial council member charged governor Mirzakwal for accusing members of the security for drinking alcohol. Participants warned to stage widespread protests if governor Mirzakwal is not replaced.
Meanwhile, Esmatullah Moradi, spokesman for the governor of Kunduz, has rejected the charges. He said ensuring security was not the sole responsibility of the governor, but of all security officials, including provincial council members. He added the replacement of officials alone cannot help bring peace and order overnight.
Kunduz remains one of the most insecure provinces in the northeast of the country.
