Khalilzad calls for swift political agreement in Afghanistan

MONITORING (SW) – The US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation has urged the Afghan government and the Taliban to reach political agreement as soon as possible.

In a series of tweets, Khalilzad said the ‘Islamic Republic’ and the Taliban must respect the demands of their people. “… The intra-Afghan war and killing have lost their legitimacy in the eyes of the overwhelming number of Afghans who need and yearn for peace and security”, he tweeted.

He called for all sides to reduce violence and move quickly to a ceasefire. “Together and with international support they must also deal with menace of unexploded ordnance and mines across the country to save precious lives, children and adults”, tweeted the U.S. Envoy while condemning the ongoing high level of violence.

A day earlier, the Afghanistan Human Rights Commission claimed the deadly blast in Ghazni that killed scores of civilians was caused by an un-exploded mortar, not explosives hidden in a motorcycle.

The AIHRC said in a statement that the children had brought this unexploded mortar before a scrap dealer to buy toys in return.

The explosion in Ghanzi province killed at least 15 civilians and injured 20 others.
