Saleh claims militants aiming to target civil activists

KABUL (SW) – Amrullah Saleh, the first vice president, has warned the militants aim to target members of the civil society.

In a social media post, Saleh said reports by the National Directorate of Security suggest the Taliban have decided to target civil society in Afghanistan’s major cities. He said the Taliban believe this killing spree would erode public sentiment and confidence in the government.

The first vice president called on members of the civil society to unite and call on the Taliban and the supporters of this group of “violence and ignorance” that the assassination cannot break the will of the people.

He said soon the names of those spreading fears among school children would be publicized and their motives exposed.

In another part of his social media post in connection with the demolition of Cinema Park, Saleh wrote that he had instructed the Ministry of Information and Culture to submit the list of all buildings as “historical heritage”, especially the historical monuments in Kabul, but it was not done.

If there is no such list, he said, the Ministry of Information and Culture is obliged to “correct” its stance on Cinema Park before the next cabinet meeting. Saleh emphasized that the government organs must have a coherent voice and that it is not acceptable to go under the influence of the commotion.

It is vital to note the Ministry of Information and Culture opposed demolition of the Cinema Park.

Saleh said he gave everyone 11 days to ultimatum that the Cinema Park was going to be demolished and a cultural center was going to be built here, but no one informed him about the historic perspective.
