KANDAHAR (SW) – Security forces have cleared the Arghandab district in Kandahar of Taliban insurgents, officials said on Saturday.
The governor’s spokesman, Bahir Ahmad Ahmadi, said the security forces had launched a military operation in Arghandab district and other areas that yield this result. According to Ahmadi, most of the villages in Arghandab have been cleared of mines and the displaced people of the district will return to their homes in the next few days.
The spokesman for the Kandahar governor said more than 100 landmines have been defused last night alone.
The Taliban have not yet commented.
The development has been welcomed by many internally displaced persons of the district living on the outskirts of Kandahar city.
Saleh Mohammad, a resident of Tabin village in Arghandab district, said he had not slept due to joy since he heard the news of the Arghandab district’s cleansing. He expressed urgency to reach his home and pomegranate orchids.
Surging violence has displaced more than 6,000 families from four districts in Kandahar.
