Taliban urged to understand realities of modern Afghanistan

MONITORING (SW) – President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has urged the Taliban to get to know the modern Afghanistan and the new generation of youth here.

On the second day of his visit to Qatar, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani said this at the Center for Conflict Studies and Humanitarian Studies at the Doha Institute. He said that he was aware of the devastating effects of the war on the lives of the Afghan people and understood the value of peace.

In part of his speech, the President said that power in Afghanistan is not a legacy and any peace agreement between the Afghan government and the Taliban must be approved by the parliament and the Loya Jirga.

He added that 75 percent of Afghanistan’s population is under the age of 30, and that many young people have not experienced Taliban rule for five years, and that the Taliban need to know and understand this generation. Pointing to the importance of peace, he said that governing Afghanistan was impossible in the absence of democracy.

International relations experts have differing views on Ghani’s visit to Doha, Qatar.

Hamid Azizi, an expert on international relations, said that President Ghani was worried about the politicians’ trip to Qatar, and for this reason, he hurried to Doha. According to him, President Ghani is trying to emphasize his role in the Afghan peace process.

Moheb Sharif, another international affairs expert, said President Ghani’s visit was aimed at resolving differences between the Afghan peace delegation and the Taliban.

The president first traveled to Kuwait and later Qatar on Monday for a two-day visit with a high-level government delegation.
