KABUL (SW) – Residents of Maidan Shahr, the center of Maidan Wardak, and a number of districts of this province, complaining about the presence of mines and unexplored ammunition left over from wars, say that the explosion of these ammunition are killing children.

They want the Islamic Emirate and demining institutes to clean these areas contaminated with mines and unexploded ammunition.

Abdul Samad, a local resident, said: “There are too many mines and unexploded ammunitions in Maidan Wardak. There has been war here for the past 40 years.”

Mohammad Amin, another resident of Maidan Wardak, said that if this province is cleared of unexploded ammunition, its residents will be spared from problems. “These mountains are full of mines and unexploded ammunition. We want the government and institutions to clean the mountains and plains.”

Likewise, Sardar Mohammad Kochi, a resident of Daymirdad district of Maidan Wardak, said that many highways and areas that were battlefields in recent years are still full of mines and unexploded ammunition.

He added that most of the time, nomads and farmers who travel from one region to another region are victims of the explosion of mines and unexploded ammunition. According to Sardar Mohammad, the government and demining institutions should inform residents, children, nomads and property owners in Maidan Wardak in this regard. He said: “There are many mines in the Kajab area of Daimirdad district that have not been cleared. Kejab region was the place of security checkpoints during the Republican regime, which are all full of mines.”

On the other hand, Bakhtiar Moaz, the governor of Maidan Wardak, also confirms that a number of residents of this province are victims as a result of the explosion of underground mines and unexploded ammunition. He added: “We are trying to talk to demining institutions in Maidan Wardak or other provinces to draw their attention to this province and clear mines and unexploded ammunition.”

According to the local officials of Maidan Wardak, five children have died and four others have been injured in the past month as a result of the explosion of mines and unexploded ammunition in Syed Abad and Daymirdad districts.
