LASHKARGAH (SW) – Farmers in Nahr-e-Saraj district of Helmand say that in the current year, due to the decrease in the price of wheat, they can can hardly make ends meet.

Gran, a farmer in the district, complaining about the drop in the price of wheat, told Salam Watandar that these days he is struggling to meet his family’s needs. He said that he had rented all the agricultural equipment and now due to the low price of wheat, he is not getting any profit and he has to go to Iran or other provinces to work.

On the other hand, a number of Helmand residents, being happy with the decrease in the price of wheat, say that if the prices increase, they will lose the ability to buy wheat.

Gul Agha, a resident of the city of Lashgargah, the center of Helmand, said that even though the price of one sack of wheat is now 400 rupees, he cannot afford to buy a sack of wheat and has to borrow. Khan Gul, another resident of Lashkargah city, said that the price of one sack of wheat is between 400 and 420 rupees, but his income is not enough to cover his family’s expenses.

According to him, currently, a small family in Helmand has 12 members, and one sack of wheat in 24 hours is hardly enough for them.

On the other hand, the local officials of Helmand say that they are announcing the creation of a suitable market to maintain the balance of supply and demand of agricultural products.

Mohammad Qasim Riaz, deputy director of information and culture department, said in the agricultural sector, there are some other products such as saffron, basil and cotton, which are being promoted to create a market for them, and factories will be established to process them soon.
