6 million Afghans experiencing food insecurity

KABUL (SW) – Amid widespread poverty, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Aid (OCHA) has said that six million Afghan citizens are currently experiencing food insecurity.

Wahid Ullah, a worker at the Maiwand road in Kabul city, told Salam Watandar that poverty has made it impossible for him to earn a livelihood for his family.

“I take 5 to 10 breads home daily, but it is not enough for everyone. When I was coming in the morning, my son said, father, will you bring bread with you at night? I said that if I got work yes, but if I didn’t work, our refuge in God, we would have to starve. Our days are ruined. I come out of home at 6:00 in the morning and go back home at 6:00 in the evening. I will do whatever it takes to find money for a few breads for my family.”

Likewise, Ahmad, a resident of Nuristan who also suffers from poverty, said that for some time now, he can only provide one meal for his family during the whole day. “There are no jobs, there is no agriculture. People here are very poor and live in bad condition. There is little food, if we get food in the morning, we don’t have food for the night. We don’t get the help from the aid organizations either.”

Juma Khan, a resident of Nili city, the center of Daikandi, said that due to his inability to earn a livelihood for his family, he is forced to feed the kind of food to minor children that is actually not eatable. “The situation of the people in Nili is very bad, we don’t have fuel or food at home at the moment. There are six people in our family and we have no income. I am also disabled”.

However, Abdul Rahman Habib, the spokesman of the Ministry of Economy, said that the Ministry has plans in hand to address the problems of the needy and will implement them in coordination with relief organizations.

“We are trying to coordinate with the United Nations agencies that work in the field of humanitarian assistance and the relevant ministries, in vulnerable areas for people who are in dire need, these projects are going to be implemented in a transparent and fair manner”.
