Khalilzad advocates for sustainable peace

18/02/2019

KABUL (SW) – President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani hosted the U.S Envoy for Afghanistan Reconciliation, Zalmay Khalilzad, for a dinner at the presidency on Sunday.

The President said on the occasion the peace process should be based on consensus on regional, international and Muslim World levels. He added the Taliban and Pakistan should clarify nature of their ties, and the ties among the criminal and terrorist networks and the Taliban should also be clarified.

Ghani stressed the peace process should be centered on the Afghan government, and should guarantee all values and gains. He stressed the U.S is seeking sustainable peace in Afghanistan with the peace talks, not an exit strategy.

Khalilzad said on the occasion the U.S is not seeking a hasty peace, but sustainable peace in the interest of Afghanistan as well as the regional countries. The U.S Envoy said he is striving to attract support from the regional countries. He asked for Pakistan’s practical cooperation for peace in Afghanistan.

In this regard, he added peace can be achieved through four main principles, shunning of ties between the Taliban and al-Qaeda, discussions over presence of foreign troops, direct talks with the Afghan government and comprehensive ceasefire.
