Tale of thick and thin times in police service

06/03/2019

GARDEZ (SW) – Ruhullah still seems pretty young, but he has been serving in the security forces for the past 14 years with pride.

In exclusive conversation with Salam Watandar, this native resident of Syed Karam district in Paktia province, said he has served at different posts in the Afghan National Police over the past 14 years. He said it was difficult to survive on the initial salary all those years ago, but now with improved pay-scale and perks, his entire family can survive.

Inspector Ruhullah said he learned the skills and techniques relevant to his jobs at the police academy. Currently, he is serving as commander of the reserve battalion in Gardez, provincial capital of Paktia.

He is married, and has four children. He has been through thick and thin times during all these years. For Ruhullah, the worst moment of his life was when he lost a number of his companions to the raging violence in the country. And, the best time of his life was a brief ceasefire in the country on the occasion of Eid last year when the entire nation was at peace without any fear. During the ceasefire, he saw a number of his friends and relatives after a gap of many years.

Unlike many of his peers who wished to become doctors, engineers and teachers, Ruhullah always wanted to join the ranks of the security forces to serve the nation. His friends admire his dedication, bravery and professionalism.

One of his fellow policemen, Khalid, said Ruhullah treats his fellow policemen and subordinates with respect and professionalism. Ruhullah said he is strong believer of the slogan ‘God, Country and Service’, and would always remain in service to his fellow countrymen.
