MAIMANA (SW) – A number of provincial council members and Faryab civil society activists claim the entire province is under the clout of the Taliban, apart from the capital, Maimana, and some district centers.
Abdul Ahad Ilbig, a member of the provincial council, said the Taliban have full control over two of districts while only the centers of the other eight districts are under government control solely owing to the mediation by the tribal elders.
Syed Zainaddin Abedi and Shah Mohammad Najwa, two local civil society activists, said in this regard that the government cannot even transport the dead and injured of security forces from the restive districts to the provincial capital. According to them, taking back control of the districts is a daunting task for the government.
Criticizing the ministries of defense and interior, Naqibullah Fayeq, the provincial governor, has acknowledged that up to 80% of Faryab is under the control of the Taliban, but the government is treating it with discrimination.
In this backdrop, advisers of the presidential office have recently traveled to Faryab to convey the problems of residents of the province to the president.
