The curious case of fainting students in Herat

06/09/2015

HERAT CITY (SW): Some five hundred female students have reportedly fainted during the last five days in western Herat province that has raised concerns about this recurring phenomenon.

More than 130 students and teachers were brought to different hospitals in Herat on Tuesday. This is the fifth such incident since last week.

Officials in Herat Public Hospital told SW that more than 100 students and teachers have been poisoned in Enjeel district just like the previous incidents in this province. There have been various assumptions among residents and government officials in Herat regarding these incidents.

Abdul Razaq Ahmadi, Head of Herat Education Department believe some groups within the department were involved in poisoning students and teachers. He feared that there could be a bigger conspiracy behind these incidents to defame and challenge education in Herat.

A number of Herat Provincial Council members blame new appointments in the Education Department for the spree.

Sayed Azim Keberzayee, a provincial council member told SW though these incidents were not life-threatening but were aimed at frightening female students and their families.

Vowing to thoroughly investigate the matter, the provincial security officials believe these incidents were planned and executed by the students and teachers themselves. Abdul Rauf Ahmadi, spokesman for Herat Police Chief, said that it was clear who were behind these incidents but could not accuse anyone as they lacked compelling evidence.
