TALUQAN (SW) – The Taliban rebels have overrun the Ai Khanum dry port in Takhar province, an official confirmed on Saturday.
Sunat Taimur, spokesman for the provincial governor, informed Salam Watandar groups of the Taliban staged coordinated assaults on the port in Dasht-e-Qala district last night. He added the rebels torched a number of installations at the port after overrunning it.
The spokesman confirmed two security personnel got killed and two more got wounded in this incident. Taimur further said the rebels took away with them six security personnel and a number of arms, ammunition and vehicles.
A number of Takhar residents informed that there were rumors about such an attack circulating prior to the actual assault.
Claiming responsibility for the attack, the Taliban asserted six security personnel are in their custody, and 11 military vehicles have been confiscated.
