KABUL (SW) – The Wolesi Jirga (lower house) on Saturday cautiously welcomed the proposed use of biometric technology in the forthcoming polls.

Taking part in the debate on this matter, a number of parliamentarians urged the Independent Election Commission to transparently utilize online biometric verification of voters so that there remains no chance of rigging in the elections.

Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi, speaker of the house, stressed people demand and deserve fair elections based on the biometric verification of voters. Ibrahimi said the IEC must ensure using the biometric system on the day of polls, and should also remain accountable.

Meanwhile, the IEC officials have announced 70 per cent studies into the mechanism for utilizing the biometric system for polls are completed. They announced some 22,000 units for biometric verifications are currently available to the IEC.

A day earlier, Abdullah Abdullah, chief executive officer, also confirmed the government would ensure using biometric technology for the forthcoming polls.
