‘People in close circles at the presidency meddling with electoral affairs’

KABUL (SW) – Mawlana Mohammad Abdullah, a commissioner at the Independent Election Commission, on Thursday said people in close circles at the presidency are meddling with electoral affairs.

Addressing a presser in this connection, the IEC commissioner said President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has not meddled with the polls personally. But, he said people in close circle around the president are indeed meddling for which he claimed to possess proof.

He said these people create hurdles in certain electoral affairs while vividly execute other selective matters for polls without prioritizing the legal merits. He said appointments at the electoral affairs are also influenced by these circles within the presidency.

Mawlana Abdullah charged the selective appointments at the IEC is coordinated between the presidency and the secretariat of the IEC.

He went on to say presidential candidates are striving hard to have some influence within the IEC. He added some members of the IEC are involved in corruption and should be referred to the legal institution for justice.
