IECC vows to have expedited addressing complaints

KABUL (SW) – The Independent Election Complaint Commission vowed to have expedited addressing objections in connection with the presidential polls.

Zarmina Haqjo Kakar, an IECC spokesman, told Salam Watandar up to 75 complaints related to provinces have been registered in the capital Kabul while scanned copies of the 90 per cent complaints lodged at the provincial levels have also reached Kabul.

She added the complaints have been broadly divided in 16 categories bases on the nature of the objections ranging from those related to the biometric verification, time of the vote cast and monitors’ observations. Kakar feared owing to the large number of complaints, it might not be possible to complete the review within the given 15-day deadline. She confirmed a total of 16500 complaints have been lodged with the IECC.

Commenting on this, Sameera Rasa, spokesperson for the Free and Fair Election Foundation of Afghanistan, said the IECC has so far failed to perform its duties properly. She stressed the peoples’ trust in the electoral process must not be harmed.

The preliminary results for the presidential polls earlier this month met with harsh criticism from the candidates.
