Number of students willing to pursue education climb by 30 %

KABUL (SW): An impressive 30 percent increase has been witnessed in the numbers of Afghan youth willing to pursue higher education, Salam Watandar has learnt.

According to the Ministry of Higher Education, 30 percent increase has been seen in the number of applicants opting for “Kankor” (university entrance exams). Akhtar Muhammad Abeer, the Ministry spokesman told Salam Watandar thatthe university entrance exams would see more than 350 thousand applicant this year.

Among which, more than 58 thousand are likely to join public universities and more than 60 thousand would join private educational institutions. According to Abeer, last year among 264 thousands of applicants, 92 thousands joined public universities and private educational institutes. This means, some 26 thousand additional students are likely to seek higher education in comparison to the last year.

Officials at the Ministry of Higher Education said that this year the university entrance exam would be held in three rounds across the country. First round of exams would be held at Badakhshan and Bamyan Provinces, the second round would be in southern provinces and the final round would be held in the capital Kabul.

It is worth mentioning that the Ministry of Higher Education is always criticized for not allowing greater number of applicants to seek higher education. In previous years, allegations of fraud and corruption have also been leveled against officials in association with the university entrance exams.

The Ministry of Higher Education vows to conduct fair and transparent Kankor exams this time.
