Lovers commit suicide on the Valentine’s Day in Sar-e Pul

14/02/2018

SAR-E PUL (SW): On 14th February – the Valentine’s Day, lovers all over the world celebrate friendship and love, however, in Afghanistan, some lovers commit suicide because choosing a spouse is not respected within many families.

25-year-old Sadeq and 24-year-old Fatima ended their lives in Sar-e Pul on Valentine’s Day because their families opposed to their marriage.

According to Zabihullah Amani, spokesperson for the governor of Sar-e Pul, the two died today (Wednesday), in the Suzma Qala district due to the intake of ‘rat poison’ before reaching to the hospital.

In Afghanistan, due to cultural and traditional norms, the young people are less likely to express their views among their families. The elders in the family usually make the final decision, and youngsters usually don’t talk about their lover and sweetheart at home.

The tradition and culture compel the lovers to see each other secretly which causes more suspicions and often have disastrous consequences for them like the other young boy who was stoned to death by Taliban in Sar-e Pul recently.

The spokesperson for the governor of Sar-e Pul told Salam Watandar that the Taliban have stoned to death the 25 years old Jamaluddin in the Laghman city of Sar-e Pul on charges of alleged adultery. However, the Taliban have not yet stated anything to the media in this regard.
