KUNDUZ CITY (SW): Though, the government forces did manage to expel the militants out of Kunduz hours after it was overrun by the Taliban, the residents remain frightened about the rebels’ return.
The locals believe the Taliban are still hiding in the outskirts of the provincial capital Kunduz City, and would once again storm the city after reinforcing and re-equiping themselves. Shamsullah, a local told Salam Watandar that the city is rocked by shelling and firing every night, which frightens the locals. Muhib, another local said that it has become extremely difficult to live in or escape from the city.
Meanwhile, Assadullah Omarkail, the provincial governor, has assured the citizens that things are under control. He added that the Special Forces of the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) are busy in night raids against the militants, and would soon clear the areas of the rebels. “I assure the people that the shortcomings in the security, which were exploited by the enemies, would not be repeated”, he said.
On the other hand, Amaruddin Wali, a member of the provincial council, assert that the provincial government has no authority and lacks proper coordination in security affairs against the Taliban. “They [local officials] are only making these statements to fool the people and disguise the central government”, he said.
Kunduz was briefly overrun for the second time by the Taliban last month, which led to death, destruction and fear among the citizens.
