KABUL (SW): President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on Sunday underlined the significance of Kabul Ring Road (KRR) for the economic up-lift of the capital.

On his official twitter handle, Ghani said today the project would not only serve as a ring road but it would also be a comprehensive urban development project.

President Ghani chaired a meeting at his office on Saturday to discuss the plan for Kabul Ring road.

The meeting was attended by Ministers of Urban Development, Public Works, Transportation, Acting Head of Kabul Municipality, Kabul Garrison Commander, Former NDS Director Amrullah Saleh, and a number of professional and high ranking government officials.

The Ministry of Public Work briefed meeting and suggested that in order for the plan to be implemented properly, a joint working group consisting of Ministry of Public Works, Urban Development, Municipality and Arazi Office should be established.

The participants then discussed technical, security and social aspects of the ring road and emphasized on the related responsibilities of the ministries and offices involved with the plan.

Following the participants’ suggestions, President Ghani highlighted people’s participation, security prospect, and social effects including infrastructure affairs as crucial assets to the construction of Kabul Ring road.

The president emphasized that if the project was not managed properly, it would have negative effects on the lives of some people. He reiterated that people should feel part of the project based on a social contract for the construction of the KRR.

At the end of the meeting, he instructed the related ministers and officials to provide a comprehensive picture of the project in two weeks.
