Ghani promises probe into Kunduz debacle

KABUL (SW): President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani said on Thursday those who have neglected their duties will be punished and those officers and personnel of the defence and security forces who have shown bravery in retaking Kunduz city will be commended.

Addressing the press after meeting elders and officials from northern Kunduz province at the Arg (Presidential Palace), the he said no one would be allowed to take advantage of situation in Afghanistan.

President Ghani advised the media outlets to keep the national interests supreme in their news coverage. He made it clear that the government strongly believes in the freedom of press.

The President noted that situation in Kunduz was totally under control. He stressed in his remarks that the will of the people for the defence of their motherland was welcome but the parallel use of arms cannot be allowed.

Ghani said the enemy cannot stand against the strong will and determination of the people. The government forces have the capacity to thwart all sorts of attacks by the enemy, he added. The President called upon young Afghans to join the rank of security forces and serve their nation. “Afghans are facing an evil and wicked enemy”, he said.

Earlier in the day, the President spoke this via video teleconference from the Tawheed National Center in ARG with the military leadership of Kunduz province about the security situation of the city and the latest developments in that province.

In this video teleconference in which members of the National Security Council were also present, General Murad Ali Murad, Deputy National Army Chief of Staff, briefed the President on retaking of Kunduz City, and assured that the situation in Kunduz city is calm, and has returned to normalcy.
