KABUL (SW) – A number of presidential candidates have called for setting up an interim set-up to replace the National Unity Government.
In a statement issued here, the alliance of a number of presidential hopefuls said an interim government within the framework of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan should be formed upon completion of the NUG term later this month.
They demanded President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani to drop his candidacy for the second term and hence lead the interim government until fresh polls. Same has been proposed for the presidential deputies. It has also demanded all presidential candidates to drop their nominations in case they wish to run for heading the interim government.
The alliance has said that in case the above mentioned first option is not materialized, the candidates fulfilling legal requirements can refer to the Ministry of Justice for nomination to lead the interim set-up.
They warned the NUG leaders of all negative consequences that might emerge in case of continuing with ‘illegal rule after the end of the legitimate term on 22 May’.
However, according to the Supreme Court ruling, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani can continue to rule until fresh polls. President Ghani said while addressing the maiden session of the parliament last month he would hold all key responsibilities and authorities until elections scheduled for September.
Presidential candidates such as Mohammad Haneef Atmar, Faramarz Tamana, Ahmad Wali Massoud, Rehmatullah Nabil, Enayatullah Hafeez, Ghulam Faroq Najrabi, Mohammad Ibrahim Alakozay, Mohammad Hakeem Torsan, Mohammad Shahab Hakimi, Noor Rehman Lewal and Noorul Haq Olomi are demanding setting up an interim government.
