KUNDUZ CITY (SW): The police chief in northern Kunduz province claimed to have forced the Taliban militants out of Kunduz city.
A day earlier, the Taliban stormed the city and occupied the downtown after clashes with the government forces. Gen. Mohammad Qaseem Junglebagh, the provincial security chief said on Tuesday that the special units of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) conducted overnight raids to repulse the rebels. He added the clean-up operations are still underway in various parts of the province.
Amarudin Wali, a member of the provincial council however, claimed that sporadic fighting in the city in still underway.
Naeem Mangal, director of the public hospital in the city told Anadolu Agency that more than 50 civilians have sustained inures. He confirmed that women and children are among those wounded in the latest clashes. Authorities have not released any information about the security forces’ casualties yet.
Syed Mahmood Danish, spokesman for the provincial governor, has said that the secretariat of provincial government, the police headquarters and all other key offices are under the control of the security forces.
