HERAT CITY (SW) – At least five people got killed and four more got wounded when three attackers stormed a police station in Herat city on Saturday.
Aminullah Amarkhail, provincial police chief, informed Salam Watandar the attackers targeted the sixth police district at around 6:30 pm on Saturday. He added situation was brought under control after killing one of the attackers within two hours of the assault.
He added the attackers armed with assault rifles and hand grenades first exploded a mini-truck loaded with explosives in front of the police station. It is said at least 400 kg of explosives were used in the attack, and the attackers wished to enter the truck inside the police station.
In the meantime, Arif Jalal, director public hospital in Herat, said five dead bodies and four injured people have been brought to the hospital. Among the victims include three civilians and two policemen. The head of sixth police district is among the four injured, he added.
The sixth police district is located in bustling downtown Herat.
