Children in Kabul saddened by study related woes

27/04/2016

KABUL (SW): Lack of proper school buildings, books and academic staff in far away provinces has been an endemic issue crippling the education system but now many students in the capital Kabul are faced with similar challenges.

A number of students in the capital told Salam Watandar that attending class in make-shift shelters and even on ground has become a routine for many of them. Lack of the availability of books was another major problem highlighted in these conversations.

Ruqaya Ahmadi, a female student, said in this regard that she and many of her classmates attend classes sitting on ground while many students have literally no books to read. Ahmad Yar, another student added that there are some 6 thousand registered students at his school but the building remains occupied by influential individuals leaving the students to study in open air.

It has been almost over a month since the new academic year has begun across Afghanistan but many students remain deprived of new books for their corresponding classes.

Responding to the situation narrated by the students, Mujib Meherdad, Spokesman for the Ministry of Education, told Salam Watandar that it is true that some 50 percent of the schools lack proper infrastructure. Citing lack of funds as a major reason, he however, expressed resolve to address the matters soon.

Commenting on the issue of books’ distribution, he said that the book distribution drive has completed across the 17 districts of the capital and it is surprising that many students have still not managed to have them.
