MAZAR-I-SHARIF (SW): Atta Mohammad Noor, the unseated governor of Balkh province, announced during the New Year celebrations on Wednesday that an agreement over his fate has been reached between his Jamiat party and the Arg (Presidential Palce).
Addressing the gathering in the provincial capital Mazar-i-Sharif, Noor credited "peoples' demand for justice movement" for the development. He hailed all efforts towards tolerance and mutual respect among Jamiat leaders and President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani. He also called for keeping Gen. Abdul Raziq, police chief of Kandahar province, at his post, and greater understanding between the ‘Green Movement’ and the Arg.
He said government posts are ‘temporary’, and the forthcoming governor in Balkh would follow his agenda. The Jamiat leader vowed to take part in the forthcoming elections with unity and force. Noor highlighted achievements made during his tenure in Balkh, saying $ 53 million have been spent on improving health services last year alone.
On behalf of the President, Mohammad Sarwar Danish, vice president, hailed efforts towards tolerance and understanding among the politicians. He lamented many forces in the country are exploiting ethnic and religious sentiments, but have forgotten about the values of tolerance.
Noor’s announcement of an understanding between the two parties comes months after the President accepted his controversial resignation, which was later rejected by the long-serving governor of Balkh.
