KABUL (SW): Mohammad Yunus Qanuni, former first vice president, and head of Northern Alliance at the Bonn Conference, today at the conference on the achievements of the Bonn Agreement said that the Bonn Conference was a major victory for Afghanistan and a huge achievement of the Mujahideen.
If the Bonn Conference was a failure, the Northern Alliance would collapse and Pakistan would try to implement its plans on Afghanistan by the Taliban, Qanuni said.
The election in Afghanistan, the drafting of the new constitution, the institutionalization of democracy, women’s rights and billions of dollars of international funds to Afghanistan are among the major achievements of Bonn Conference, Qanuni added.
Meanwhile, a participant of this conference rejected Qanuni’s remarks and said that whatever the Mujahideen representatives agreed to in the Bonn Conference was against the Jihad and the ideals of Ahmad Shah Masood, the nation’s hero.
According to this participant, even Burhanuddin Rabbani, the former head of the Jamiat-e Islami initially opposed the Bonn Agreement.
Yunus Qanuni emphasized on the transparent elections of Wolesi Jirga, district councils and the presidential election. He called on the Independent Election Commission officials to prevent fraud and violations in the election process in order to ensure a widespread turnout of people in the upcoming election.
18 years ago, in December 2001, representatives of various political and military groups from Afghanistan met in Bonn Germany to discuss the formation of a government that would take power in Afghanistan after the Taliban.
Under the Bonn agreement, Hamid Karzai who until then was not a well-known figure was elected as Interim President for six months in Afghanistan. In the same month, Hamid Karzai swore in as head of Afghanistan’s interim administration in Kabul and power was transferred from Burhanuddin Rabbani to him at an official ceremony with the presence of international guests and became the Interim President of the country.
