KABUL (SW): Breaking all taboos related to lavish weddings, a young couple has tied knot in a low key affair setting a new trend in the country.
Khatira finally said yes to her long-time friend Poyan who was studying together with her in India. The couple invited close relatives and friends from their own Turkmen community in Afghanistan for a modest yet striking gathering in the capital Kabul.
Speaking to Salam Watandar, the young bride said they wanted to set a trend for young couples who are waiting for years for their big day due to lack of money.
The wedding was enhanced by participation of poets and artists. Maryam Ataey, sister of the bride, said she plans to contribute financially towards the education of unprivileged people in the country.
It is worth noticing the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) approved a bill last year banning lavish weddings in the country in a bid to curtail the mounting expenses on matrimonial ceremonies, but there has not been a significant change in the society.
However, young Khatira and Poyan have set a new trend encouraging others to follow.
