KABUL (SW): President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has admitted not enough has been done to eliminate violence against women.
Ghani was addressing a ceremony at the Arg (Presidential palace) to mark the International Women's Day 2017. Ghani said Afghanistan can only progress if women are given their due rights. He added the Afghan women should take active part in fight against corruption, enforcement of the law and demanding their rights.
The President added there has been some progress securing women’s rights, but it is not enough. “The fact is we are far behind in our struggle against discrimination and injustice towards women than what the Constitution demands, there is no doubt we are moving towards what the Constitution demands, and there would be no compromise over women’s rights”, he added.
Abdullah Abdullah, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), said on the occasion efforts against violence and discrimination towards women should start from within the public sector. “The Labour and Social Welfare Ministry, the Women Affairs Ministry, and the Finance Ministry have assured the women that the gender related offices would be strengthened, a policy has been made but we lack funds in this regard”, he added.
