KABUL (SW): Hundreds of Kabul University students on Tuesday staged a protest demonstration on the KU campus blaming the ‘corrupt and useless academic system’ for the suicide of a female student.
Zohra Khawari, a student of the faculty of Veterinary Medicine, committed suicide on Saturday night after her thesis was rejected by the faculty for the fifth time. The protesters said this fifth year student from Daikundi became victim of the ‘corrupt and useless academic system’. They also held the female hostel’s management in this regard for delaying shifting of Zohra to hospital after she consumed poisonous substance.
“Whatever problems Zohra went through we have been witness to. All faculty members of the Veterinary Medicine and even the teachers never listened to her, and in fact disrespected her”, one such protesting student told Salam Watandar. One of her fellow student informed that Zohra’s sister informed that she was crying, and when the students reached her room, she was lying on the floor unconscious, but the management did not cooperate fast enough to save her life.
The students have warned to close down the Veterinary Medicine faculty if their demands for reforms in the academic system are not met.
Meanwhile, Abdul Larif Roshan, interim minister for the Ministry of Higher Education, has vowed to seriously pursue the case of Zohra Khawari. He said the concerned teacher and director for female’s hostel have been referred to the judiciary.
Students in Bamyan also held a similar protest demonstration.
