FAIZABAD (SW): Members of provincial council in Badakhshan have said it has been 10 days since Zebak district has fallen to the Taliban insurgents, but the government has not started military operations to take back the district.

Talab-u-Din Qaderi, member of provincial council, talking to Salam Watandar said since the fall of Zebak district, no military operation has been taken to take back the district from the insurgents. “Ever since the fall of Zebak district, Ishakishim district has become the front line between the security forces and the Taliban insurgents. Despite the fact that re-enforcements are dispatched to Zebak district, no military operation is planned to take back the district from insurgents”, informed Qaderi.

The provincial council member also said at least 500 families are displaced due to latest insurgency in the district. Ahmad Faisal Begzad, the governor of Badakhshan, told Salam Watandar that the government is ready to launch military operation, and take back the fallen territory from the insurgents, but due to bad weather conditions in Zebak and Ishkashim districts, the military operation is postponed. “Ishakashim district is taken back from the Taliban by security forces, and they are currently providing security for the district. I have directed the ‘emergency committee’ to look after the displaced families”, assured Begzad.

Mahfoozullah Akbari, spokesman for the northwestern police zone, said military operation is halted in Zebak district, but aerial operation is ongoing in the district. According to the spokesman, at least 8 Taliban fighters are killed while 20 more are injured.
